Maintenance question

Time for a Lube,Oil and filters change. It appears that places such as T/A, Petro, etc truck stops will do LOF services for a few hundred $ less than say Coach Care or the Monaco service center. Oil,filter and fuel filters is a pretty straight forward procedure. My concern would be a properly done chassis, driveshaft, etc lube. Any experiences good or bad with truck stop type operations appreciated. Am I missing something here?

RE: Extended service contract

I just brought my coach in for repairs covered under the extended warranty plan. This is the 2nd time I have used this "service". The first time they denied payment because they stated that Monaco had a "secret agreement" with the part manufacturer to cover the part for 3 years instead of 1 as stated. The trouble we had getting that manufacturer to cover their secret agreement was ridiculous. Now to the current claim. The $50.00 deductible has grown to $220.00 because the warranty folks refuse to pay freight, refuse to pay the full price for the item that Monaco is selling the repair shop, and don't like the repair shop's labor rates. Here is what the repair shop owner told me. He has beein in business for 30 years fighting with warranty companies. The dealer who sells you the policy gets 33% commission, the administrative costs to maintain the coverage are high and the warranty company tries to deny every claim. As an example, you buy a 5 yr extended warranty plan. The first year is covered by the manufacturer. Many components have a 2 yr coverage some more. The chassis is covered for 3 years. The engine and tranny are covered for 5 yrs. You ain't buying much for your 3-4 thousand bucks are you. In addition, most component manufacturers will sell you an extended warranty for several years for 100-150 bucks like the refrig, A/C water heater folks offer. IMHO I would pass on it if I were you. I will never purchase another one. JMHO, I could be wrong. I'm sure many posters will come on and tell you how an extended warranty saved them umpteen thousand bucks. Many more could post how they got the shaft trying to use theirs. By the way, mine is the Monaco factory extended warranty trhat they hype so soundly in their magazine.

RE: TO LUBE OR NOT TO LUBE

Just to clear up the issue somewhat- The engine now has almost 29,000 miles on it. I had the LOF work done twice already once at about 13000 miles and then last oct at about 25000. The warranty issue is a prime consideration.

TO LUBE OR NOT TO LUBE

Doing a cross country trip next month. When we leave my Cummins 330 ISC will have 11 months and 3883 miles on the oil and filters. When we return from the trip, if I do nothing, the engine will have 13 months and 9797 miles on the oil and filters. Would you have the LOF work done before or after the trip? IIRC this maintenance is due at 12 months or 15000 miles. Would the extra month hurt? Is it more time or mileage that impacts the efeectiveness of the oil, filters, etc?

RE: La Mesa RV

If the entire outfit shut down it would be a good thing for the failing industry. I clearly remember them getting busted, along with Tiffin, for jacked up MSRP stickers. I would not buy a roll of TP from them. Just my opinion, I could be wrong. There are probably a few folks out there who were treated as royalty by this company (in their own minds, anyway)

RE: Pre-purchase questions

The ONLY question is: Does your insurance provide full replacement coverage if your vehicle is totaled or, like many many insurers do, provide you with blue book value if totaled. If it only provides blue book value if totaled, be prepared to write a very large check. Progressive provides a replacement vehicle for the first 5 years, then a refund of full purchase price thereafter. Please do your homework.

RE: Extended Warranty

you did not mention if you had a gas coach or diesel. If you have a diesel/Allison, the mfg warranty are as long as any AFFORDABLE extended warranty. If you want to spend 5K or so to get a 7 yr warranty, it's your money. You can get extended warranties for the bulk of the interior components from the manufacturers for a lot less money. If you finance an extended warranty and cancel same, you do not get any money back;the money goes to the finance company who then lowers your payment a little. Think about the following: take the $3k-$5k the warranty is costing and put it in a savings account. Use that to pay for items that break when they are out of warranty. JMHO

RE: Easy Way to Improve Mileage

What is your time worth? I guess it depends on your employment/retired status, your financial status, and for some, the size of your ego. Let's do some math. I just got back from a 1050 mile trip on mostly flat terrain. I religiously stuck to 55 mph as best as I could. My mileage for the first 28,000 miles on my Cummins 330 was almost a perfect 8.0. On this trip it was right at 9.5. A whole lot of semis passed me on the interstate portions of my journey and they may have been doing 60-62 on average. On a 300 mile day, doing 62 you get there in 4 hrs 50 minutes. Doing 55 you get there in 5 hrs 27 minutes. You save 37 minutes doing 62. If fuel is $5.00 gal, and 62 gets you 8 mpg it costs $187.50 in fuel. If 55 gets you 9.5 mpg, the fuel costs $157.85. You save $29.65 and it costs you 37 minutes. That means your time is worth $48.00 hr. That works for me.

RE: RV "clubs" circular rip offs?

Whoa Driver! Re-read my post. I did not refer to any group as a rip off. My reference to being a rip off was the allegation, made on another forum, that to belong to Coach Net one had to belong to FMCA. To belong to Monaco America one has to belong to FMCA. To belong to an FMCA group, obviously one has to belong to FMCA. My issue was and still is, if one wants to belong to Monaco America and FMCA wants to raise their dues to ANY level, one must pay the price and that my friend is a rip off. And where did you get the impression I was a non- member. I belong to FMCA, Monaco America, the Northern Nevada Prospectors chapter of the FMCA and Coach net. The only association it is imperative to me to hold onto is Coach Net. And thanks to the folks on this forum who advise, as opposed to flame, I have my answer. Have a great summer.

RE: Honest opinion Toyo tires yes or no

I have "heard" that Toyo tires are truck tires and not "rv tires" as Goodyears are. Therefore they ride like a truck. Who knows?

RV "clubs" circular rip offs?

I just read on another thread that in order to belong to coach net one has to belong to a manufacturers club or FMCA. If this is true it is just another cog in the club circular rip offs. In order to belong to my local FMCA club I must belong to FMCA. In order to belong to Monaco America, I must belong to FMCA. FMCA is considering a 41% dues increase which I find ludicrous. My only concern is Coach Net which I find to be a valuable tool to have. The rest of the "Clubs" I can live without. I guess my question is Does one have to belong to ANY club in order to have Coach net coverage?

RE: Yosemite West / Mariposa KOA (Midpines)

if you have a cat don't tell em about it. they charge $3.00 a day per cat. Just another KOA ripoff. There are so many KOA ripoffs I never darken their doorways anymore, period.

RE: Waxing for first time... advice

the best produdt I have ever used is called Perfect Detail. Original intent of the produst was to use on airplanes for that slick smooth finish. You put this syuff on with a spray bottle, very little needed, wipe it off immediately using a micro fiber cloth. Can be applied in direct sun and to a relatively dirty rig. FANTASTIC. Lasts through several washes, repels dust and dirt, sometimes a touch up only requires a damp cloth. I use this product on all of the glass, never streaks, mirrors, chrome too. Awesome product. $40.00 gallon- maybe a quart to do whole rig, windows and all.

RE: national rv, here is the deal

why would one buy GAP insurance when many companies, Progressive for example, either replace the vehicle or give you the full purchase price in cases of a total loss. don't waste money on gap ins, get an RV policy.

playa bonita vs the reef

last in PP in 04 and stayed at Playa Bonita. We enjoyed the park but it was a bit cramped. Do not recall touring the reef park. Their website shows their location quite a ways out of town on the road to Cholla Bay. Would appreciate any feedback as to which is the better place to stay because.................

puerto penasco danger rumors

there are rumors abounding here in casa grande that puerto penasco is the new crime capital of the world with robberies of americans common place. In reading dozens of recent posts from Rocky Point all fail to mention this crime wave, leading one to believe you folks down there are starting these rumors to keep all of us up here so there is more room for you all. Seriously, any issues down there one should be concerned about?

RE: Tiffin vs Newmar

Both are gret coaches. If you decide on the Allegro, shop a few dealers as Tiffin has been caught in the past printing up special MSRP stickers for dealers who are running some kind of financing 'deal" to help the dealers offset the interest rate buy down costs. It amounted to over 10 grand per coach so buyer beware. In fairness to Mr. Tiffin, since he got caught doing this in the past, I doubt he would risk their heretofor good rep to repeat this consumer scam.

RE: Weighing Motorhome

the manufacturers sticker for the individual coach is posted on the unit, often on the inside of the medicine cab door. this contains more info than just gross weight limits; it should contain Unloaded weight and CCC weight, etc. There is no reason to weigh the coach to verify these weights. what you should do is be comfortable with the CCC before purchasing. Some coaches have very little carrying capacity and therefore are easily overloaded. As an example, the $1,760,000 prevost featured in this months FMCA magazine has only 1200 pounds of carrying capacity. I won't be buying that coach. What is important is that you load your coach as you would for perhaps a 2 week trip. Then weigh all four corners. Make sure your within limits of axle ratings. And most importantly, air up your tires based on these weights. There have been many threads about how to properly weigh the corners, and where to find your tire mfg charts for recommended pressure levels.

RE: CA hwy 1 from Crescent city to L.A in 40 ft DP

I now see someone has posted the CA map that lists what hiways MH over 40 ft are prohibited. It has been updated since we got one but a whole lot of Hwy 1 is included. That should tell you something. Do it by toad.
